Code of Conduct

Code of Conduct for the North American Forest Soils Conference

Welcome, attendees!  All Participants of NAFSC are required to abide by the meeting code of conduct.  NAFSC organizers are committed to providing a safe, productive and welcoming environment for all participants, and have adopted a Code of Conduct similar to the Tri-Societies (ASA-SSSA-CSSA), Ecological Society of America, and American Geophysical Union.  NAFSC can serve as an effective forum to consider and debate science-relevant viewpoints in an orderly, respectful, and fair manner, and this Code of Conduct is important to creating an inclusive, supportive, and collaborative environment for all participants. 

Expected Behavior

  • Treat all participants with kindness, respect and consideration, valuing a diversity of views and opinions, including those you may not share.
  • Communicate openly, with respect for other participants, critiquing ideas rather than individuals.
  • Refrain from demeaning, discriminatory, or harassing behavior and speech directed toward other participants.
  • Be mindful of your surroundings and of your fellow participants. Alert NAFSC organizers if you notice a dangerous situation or someone in distress.
  • Respect the rules and policies of the meeting venue, hotels, or any other venue.

Harassment and Safety

NAFSC prohibits intimidating, threatening, or harassing conduct and this policy applies to everyone associated with the meeting.  Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately.  Meeting participants violating these rules may be asked to leave the meeting (and may not be allowed to attend future meetings) at the discretion of Society leadership.  Harassment of any kind is a serious issue, will not be tolerated in any form, and includes the following:

  • Offensive comments related to ethnicity, religion, disability, age, economic status, physical appearance, gender, or sexual orientation.
  • Deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome attention.

If you are being harassed, notice someone else being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact NAFSC organizers who will work to resolve the situation.
